Description
I had horses that followed me everywhere when they were colts and there are several good stories about them. But this is Spunky, the best cutting horse, ever. He was magnificent in a parade and he made Barrel racing look like "a piece of cake". He made it easy! He lived up to his name. He never liked to go past the boundaries of the ranch and he always let me know about it! He would rear and stomp and try to head for home. He almost put me over his head, one day, up at the foothill ranch, when he stopped too fast, because there was a rattlesnake in the trail ahead of him. He was smart, funny and ornery. (You might know that I would eventually marry a man with those same qualities, 7 years later. I am still trying to train him after 60 years of marriage! - the man, that is.) In this photo, Spunky's tail is short. That is because, Star, one of the colts who followed me all over everywhere, chewed the tails off of all the other horses. People driving past the ranch must have wondered why all but one of the colts had their tails all shorn off.
Spunky was, what we call a Mustang Horse (or pony) and was always fit and ready to go. He did manage to buck me off, once, much to my mothers chagrin. He was fast and there were times, when someone else was riding, Spunky could turn so fast that the rider would suddenly find himself standing on the ground when, only moments before he was on Spunky's back! He was as good at rounding up cattle as he was at Barrel Racing. If you turned him to go after a calf he knew just what to do. You just had to stay on his back while he was doing it! I don't know who trained him but I always liked to think that Spunky was a NATURAL He was good!

This is a wonderful image of you and Spunky
Phyllis Kaltenbach replied:
Thank you, very much, Shoal. That was my life, until I married a "town boy",a month before I turned 19. But I have seen a lot of country and have had a wonderful life and 3 children since I was married. I do miss my horses. Have to spoil the cat, now! Smiles!

Thank you, so very much, Geraldine. There was no color film when this was taken (or, it may have been too expensive.)

Sorry about the wrong words. My spell check thinks it knows better the I! That WAS my "Shetland pony" and I know i put that in correctly! My figers must have gotten tangled on "before" and I don't know what happened to the spelling of Spunky! LOL Please forgive me for not checking!
