Description
Bruce (that's my husband) was playing the piano, beautifully this morning. The kitty, Pico (for Picasso) had conned me into sitting in the easy chair, in the bedroom, to brush her and had gone to sleep in my lap.
My mind wandered to when I was somewhere around 5. Mom had dressed me with a pretty dress with a fluffy skirt and my hair was all long golden ringlets - a little "Shirley Temple." That is the way little girls dressed then. Out the door I went with Daddy". We were going to a livestock show and sale.
Shortly after we arrived, I saw a little white faced herferd, heifer calf and I wanted her for my own. Daddy left me curled up in the hay with the calf and went about his business. Daddy and the owner of the calf showed up eventually and the man said he was about to show "my" heifer and asked if I would like to lead her into the ring. Obviously my experience with livestock showed. When I led her into the ring the bidding became brisk. Unfortunately, the price climbed higher and higher and Daddy had to quit bidding. It went well beyond what the calf was worth. I was sad.
That was OK, though, I would have liked to have raised her. I had other things that occupied my time. I had a colt that would follow me out of the field and proceed to follow me everywhere I went. I am sure the dog was following too. We had a pretty old Mule who let 4 of us (2 cousins, my sister, Norma, and me) climb on her back and then slide down her neck. The old Mule loved that and so did we. I had my pony that I loved, that took me everywhere. And I had to help Daddy build whatever piece of equipment he needed when farming. It was about the beginning of World War II, but it was beautiful and peaceful where we lived. This may continue later..... The FAA water mark will not show on your finished product.***

Thank you Gordon. I loved my life on the ranch until I was 17 and then went on to work and wander the world with my husband of 62 years. I don't regret any of it. 😻

What a sweet painting of this calf and you. You captured the innocence of both. Love the smile on his face.
