The "castle" in the sun is Al-Mariy-yat (the Watchtower). It is the biggest fortress ever built by the Arabs in Spain and it housed within its triple wall palaces and mosques.. What a delightful view of the "castle" as you come into the Harbor of Almeria, Spain!
The easternmost Andalusian capital dominates a coastline dotted with almost virgin beaches and an interior marked by peculiar semideserted ecosystems. Formerly one of the most important ports in the Caliphate of Cordoba, Almer�a reveals its Alcazaba (citadel) and its cathedral, on the shores of the Mediterranean. Narrow streets with whitewashed fa�ades are elements of its picturesque historic quarter. Hi Phyllis, That is one wall I would not want to try and breach. Those hills behind it look barren of grasses and such. Nice photo and I did read the extensive write-up. Nicely done.
