Description
This Beautiful Hawaiian Painting on black velvet is what I see first thing in the morning when I awake. Where I have it hanging, it catches the morning light thru frosted windows and the light, painted into the lovely painting, shows as it does here. The beautiful wave stands out and is the first thing I see, and then the tree and the sunset. Long before I became an artist, sometime in the late 1950's or early 1960's, we had our first visit to Hawaii, from California. I loved this perfect Hawaiian scene, on black velvet, at first sight. We didn't have much money then, so I can guarantee that we did not pay over $20.00 for it, possibly $10.00. I recently added the new bamboo frame. That may be when the water line got tilted a bit. I have often wondered, just who it was that painted this lovely painting. It is signed Sands. I wonder if that is the signature of the artist or the name of the painting. I have always thought is was the name of the artist. I have always liked paintings on black velvet and wonder how black velvet received such a negative reputation. I have another black velvet painting of a beautiful Hawaiian girl named Koloki. This painting is not for sale!

We bought this painting in Hawaii, somewhere around 45 years ago. We were hoping someone in the Artist's family might recognize. Thank you Miroslava!

Did you paint this, or just buy it?
Phyllis Kaltenbach replied:
My husband and I bought this on one of our first trips to Hawaii, a very long time ago. I wish I HAD painted it. It is on black vetlvet and hangs in the early morning light in in out bedroom. I was hoping someone would know the artist, name, "Sands"!
Phyllis Kaltenbach replied:
I wish I could put the italics on either side of his name, "Sands" in my title. Or, for all I know, that may be the name of the painting. I have always assumed the artist was "Sands".
